Boxing and the Bicentennial Celebrations

As part of the country’s Bicentennial Independence Celebrations, on September 11th, the world’s largest bullring, the Plaza Monumental in Mexico City (50,000 capacity), will play host to an impressive line-up of bouts in a spectacular organised by the World Boxing Council (WBC) under the name of the Gala Boxística del Bicentenario.

Without doubt, boxing is one of the most important of all the sports that take place in Mexico given the impressive role it has performed by placing Mexico on the world map through the simple fact that the country has produced an incredibly long list of world champions.

The local boxer Erick “Terrible” Morales, three times world champion in different weights, is heading the show with his defense of the WBC World Welterweight title against the Scottish pugilist Willie Lemond.

Also in the line-up of stars is the country’s former world flyweight champion, Édgar Sosa, who is to face Ryan Brito of the Philipines, the winner with the promise of a world title fight as his prize.

Another bout sees two Mexican’s pitted face-to-face: Daniel “Tremendous” Estrada takes on Reyes Sánchez, currently number six in the WBC ranking. And another Mexican WBC world champion, this time female, in the form of the super flyweight Ana María “the Warrior” Torres, who will fight it out with the German, Alexia Graf, who currently holds the World International Boxing Federation (WIBF) title, a definate showcase event.

Last, but certainly not least, the event will also serve as a homage to the career of the local boxing hero José Sulaimán, who is currently in his 35th year as head of the World Boxing Council. In all, an event not for the faint hearted, but certainly not to be missed.

According to the local Toursim Minister for Mexico City, Alejandro Rojas Díaz-Durán, the idea of organising this event is to demonstrate to the world that Mexico City is an important forum with regard to sporting and entertainment spectacles, adding that this niche of tourism activities generates an income for the city of around 1.8 million pesos per year.
